Noncontrolling shareholders (historically known as minority shareholders or minority interests) exist when the parent controls a subsidiary but does not own all of the equity of that business. In this case some of the equity funding of the group is provided by shareholders other that those who own the parent. Noncontrolling shareholders own a share of part of the group. This cannot be ignored.
